Me: You said that you would not accept donations. What is your philosophybehind it?

In a place like Bihar, if you start taking donations, a lot of people will blame you. They will immediately start thinking that donation is the reason why I am running such a programme. Secondly, I want to show that if one has a keen desire to achieve something, one can do it without infrastructure, without any donation. For success, only will power is needed. I want to demonstrate that. Right when we started this programme, I had decided we would not accept donations. This is the beauty of the programme. My hope is that it will inspire others to start similar programmes, not just for IIT, but for other fields.

Me: What drives your students? Do they come to transform their lives,their careers? Or do they come to learn Science?

They come primarily to change their lives and the lives of their families. That is the foremost thing on their minds. Science, Mathematics is only an approach to change that life. They cannot lead their life as they wish. For them, it’s much more difficult because they have to look after their family as well.

Me: How do you build their character?

I cite examples. Examples are more important than any philosophy or theory. My wife, Ritu Rashmi, is also from IIT. After she completed IIT, she took up a job, then quit it to join the programme. I have no funds to keep a secretary, so my wife volunteers. I tell them about her journey also. I tell them that if I wanted to, I could always earn money by teaching at big coaching institutes. I don’t do so because my life’s goal is to train them. So, in return, I expect them to put in their best.

Dowry is a big problem in Bihar. I married my wife without taking any dowry. I show them examples from previous batches, students who are now married and didn’t take dowry. I have always believed that if there is education, then all problems can be solved. No one can exploit you if you are educated.
