Rodina, Southern Kalnai Mountains
YOR 415, Late Summer
Arn stood on a ridgeline beside Alan, Carol, and Kim twenty leagues southeast of the clan township of Rodina. Galad had channeled the time-mists that had brought the Forsworn here, along with a thousand of Vahltehr’s warriors and dozens of Varjupaik soldiers. The Rukkumine army poured into the cliff-lined valley below them, ten thousand strong, headed toward the narrow pass that would grant them access to Vahltehr’s highlands.
Vahltehr and his clan would have to hold that pass. The Forsworn and the Varjupaik soldiers, supported by Carol, Arn, and the Endarian siblings, would form the poisonous viper that struck at their enemy’s heels.
For the last several days, Arn had worked himself to exhaustion experimenting with controlling his visions, limiting them to the immediate future in his vicinity.
Just as importantly for him personally, he was learning to fight again, this time while employing his waking dreams. Quincy had been his sparring partner, each of them using sticks instead of sword and knife. For the first several sessions, the lanky swordsman had left Arn covered with black-and-blue bruises that he refused to let Kim heal. Pain locked the lessons into place in Arn’s mind and provided an increased sense of urgency.
He could now see what would play out depending on which actions he took. He could replay a scenario dozens of times in rapid sequence until he found the path of greatest advantage. And he had gotten fast enough that this ever-changing foresight no longer slowed his natural reactions.
In the past he had relied on his intuition to cue him to an opponent’s attack before it occurred. This new and evolving skill had already surpassed the level he’d previously attained. The downside was how quickly his exertions tired him.
“Looks like the action is about to get started,” Alan said, pointing to the lead elements of the Rukkumine forces.
They were making their way into the pass, where the walls of the canyon closed to within three hundred paces of each other. Vahltehr and his clansmen would be waiting to meet them just beyond the first sharp bend, a twist in the terrain that would shelter them from enemy archers and magical attacks from afar. It would also allow Vahltehr to rotate his warriors, sending forward reserves who had just consumed their enhancement potions, replacing the frontline fighters whose mystic tinctures had worn off.
Arn saw turmoil ripple through the enemy several moments before he heard the distant clash echo through this canyon.
“They’re bunching up,” Alan said.
“Wait for it,” Arn said, sampling the vision storm that cycled through the protected corners of his mind.
Carol magnified the distant scene. Just as Arn had foretold, follow-on troops pressed forward toward the battle, jamming the entrance to the pass with bodies. Clouds boiled into the sky above the cliffs as arcane fireballs arced outward from within the massed enemy. These exploded into the cliffs that formed the sharp bend in the canyon, loosing boulders that bounded downward, gathering companions that plummeted onto the Rukkumine soldiers.
