Bridges stared at the plate he had scrubbed five times already. She was staring at him, but he couldn’t make eye contact. If he did, he’d give in and tell her everything, without being prepared.

First, he had to find out a way to know for sure that Cooper was Eduardo’s son. Then they needed to be somewhere away from the boys. That would give her a chance to vent, cry, scream—or whatever—without fear of hurting them.

He knew she’d never blame Cooper. When the dust settled, he suspected she’d want to take him in and raise him as her own, right alongside Sebastian. But first, she’d have to deal with the knowledge that Eduardo had betrayed her.

His fist squeezed all the water out of the washrag. If he was experiencing this level of anger, he couldn’t imagine what she was going to go through.

“Tomorrow after church, you want to go riding? We can go on the beach.” He looked out the window.

“The boys would love that.”

“No. I thought my mom could keep them, and it could be an adult-only thing.”

“Are you asking me on a date?” She sounded horrified, but he might just be too sensitive.

He couldn’t look at her. “No!” That came out harsher than he intended. “We’re friends. Family. It’s not a date, just a little break from 24/7 kid duty. When was the last time you did something just for you? Not work related or with Sebastian?”

She blinked at him a couple of times. “I...” She tucked her head. “I don’t remember. Eduardo arranged a surprise weekend on the Riverwalk in San Antonio. Just him and me. That was years ago.” She moved away and sat on a chair. She seemed stunned.

“You have friends, right? Any girls’ nights out to the movies or socials at the church?” She couldn’t have been that isolated. But how would he know? He’d been at a safe distance in Oklahoma.

She shook her head. “I can’t think of anything. This will be my first adult-only fun since Eduardo. Maybe I need to get out more. I’ve been invited to several church activities, but when I had time off from work, I just wanted to be home with Sebastian.”

“That makes sense. With your dad’s illness, I’m sure fun wasn’t on your agenda.”

“No. It hasn’t even been on my radar.” She rose, moved toward him and touched his jaw, gently pulling him toward her until they were staring each other in the eye. “Thank you.”

His throat went dry. She was so close he could see the variation of brown streaks in her eyes. His gaze lowered to her lips. In slow motion, she leaned in and pressed her lips to his. They were so soft and had a slight flavor of fruit, cherry.

He needed to stop, but he’d waited his whole life to have her kiss him. Maybe just a moment longer.

What was he doing? With a growl, he stepped away. It was the most painful move of his life.

“Bridges?” She sounded lost and confused.
