Chapter 17

He Did Nothing

I didn’t lose consciousness after the attack, but my mind was fuzzy from the pain of my broken nose, injured back, and the constant wailing of the alarm system that seemed to get louder with each passing second.

Two police officers arrived much sooner than I would have expected after the security company called emergency services. It turned out they were already close by as they were the two officers who’d escorted Gray back to his house after he’d posted bail. I didn’t know if that meant our bodybuilder had gotten lucky and had entered Gray’s house just after the officers had left or if he’d been staking out the house in anticipation of Gray’s return.

The officers knew Alana’s relationship to Ms. Hu since she’d apparently told them multiple times that her daughter was a detective as they were affixing the GPS bracelet around Gray’s ankle. Maybe she thought that would make them change their minds and allow Gray to roam the island. Maybe she was just trying to impress her new boyfriend. Who knew, and I guess it didn’t really matter. The point is that one of the officers called Alana as they were rushing to Gray’s house and alerted her to the potential security concern.

I was sitting on the stone patio when Alana got there as I didn’t want to bleed on the carpet any more than I already had. Alana entered the backyard through the sliding glass doors and walked over to me. She put her hand gently on the side of my face.

“Are you all right?” Alana asked me.

“I think my nose is broken.”

“Have you looked at it yet?”

“No.”

“Trust me. It’s broken.”

She turned and looked back into the house.

“How’s your mother?” I asked.

Alana turned back to me.

“She said you saved her life.”

I told Alana the guy who’d attacked us had been the same man who Meg had seen around Gray’s new restaurant.

“Find Caleb. He works for him,” I said.

“We’ll get him. We’ll get them both.”

Then I remembered that I’d parked my convertible behind the green sedan. I gave Alana directions to where my car was, and she sent one of the officers to check it out.

“I’m taking my mother to the hospital to have her throat looked at. You need to come with us,” Alana said.

“What about Gray?” I asked.

“He’s going to be fine. I suspect he got off the lightest. I’ll leave an officer here with him.”

The other officer returned to the house just as Alana, her mother, and I were walking down the driveway.

“Did you find the car?” Alana asked.

“That was his sedan. You can see where he tried to get the car out of there. The garage door and the BMW are damaged.”

“Ah, damn, not my car again,” I said.

“I think it’s still drivable,” the officer said.

“Run the plates for me. I’m sure it’s listed to a rental agency, but I want to know the name of the driver,” Alana said.

“You got it,” he said, and he went back into the house.
