Fifteen

It felt strange to leave the brothel after being there for two days, but Tyler knew they’d already stayed too long. Danny was waiting for them on the other side of the Blightwood forest and it was time they got started. Zimu, after coming back to consciousness, had given them a place to recover after the events of the dragon attack. With her help they’d managed to have the remaining bounty hunters arrested by the guard. Nobody was sure how long their imprisonment would last, but it would at least keep them out of the way until the trio could get clear of Zoethaven. Liran, on the other hand, was assumed dead and consumed. Tyler had opened the bag once and called for him into the void. All he heard was a low rumbling laugh from Celindra and a tone of surprise to hear he was still alive.

With his things packed and most of his aches healed, Tyler waited on the front porch of the Gilded Clam for his companions. The porch was mostly deserted early in the morning, although a few die hard patrons were already inside getting their daily dose of ale and titillation. Leaning against the railing he looked out over the city that was still shrouded in mist blown in from the ocean. The first beams of light from the rising sun caught the tower and the crystal prism at its peak. The moment it struck the center of the stone a rainbow of colors spilled down on the misty city, the fog blending them together to create even more radiance.

Tyler stared as if lost in a dream. There were moments where he found himself wishing he never had to leave Bramoria. His problems melted away and he could get lost in the beauty of the world around him that was so unlike his own. In those moments there were no parents to please, no one to save, and no harsh realities to deal with. It was just him and the beating of his own heart. Those fleeting minutes of silence made him yearn for more. In the safety of his own mind he was able to admit he’d been lying to himself and his friends about wanting to go home for some time. Even so, he found it hard to imagine living out the rest of his life inside of a storybook. Besides, the hero never got to stay, that’s how it always went. He didn’t consider himself a hero, but he figured the same rules applied to anyone sucked into a magic book and there was no reason to believe this one was any different.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”

Tyler glanced over his shoulder to see Ninsar drop her bag and step up beside him. She leaned over the railing and craned her head up to the sky, watching the rainbow of colors dance over the city as the prism shimmered.

“This was always my favorite part of living here,” she continued. “It’s the reason I stayed for so long.
