The four of them sat around the table. No light shone in from outside, for it was not yet dawn. Three wax tapers lit the room.

Rogat leaned back and opened the early morning meeting. ‘Karson, he really is the son of our king. Or do you think that any cadet is capable of being so obstreperous, annoying, unbearable and generally maddening?’

The addressee responded: ‘And even if he was the king himself, the next time he interferes with my daughter, I will kill him. Indeed, if I ever see him in her company again, I will kill him.’

Rogat frowned and looked at him but said nothing.

Karek explained: ‘I slipped out of the fortress. When I came back, I nearly drowned in the shaft, for the grilled trapdoor was bolted. Milafine…,’ he glanced at her, ‘…opened it at the last moment, so that I wouldn’t die.’

The girl sat there without moving.

‘That was it, basically.’

‘What do you mean, basically?! WHAT ELSE HAPPENED?’ Karson hadn’t yet quite recovered his senses, it seemed.

Rogat scratched his chin and looked at Karson. ‘It means that your daughter saved Karek’s life, that’s all.’

Karson gazed at Milafine. His face changed. His hate-filled features softened, replaced by tenderness and love as he looked at his daughter.

Rage and scepticism returned with equal speed. ‘Now, start from the beginning. What is the Prince of Toladar doing with us, spending his time surrounded by cadets?’

‘Tedore insisted on bringing him to safety here and also to show him what a soldier’s life is like.’

‘Since he’s arrived here, he’s been stumbling from one catastrophe to the next. I understand safety as something quite different. Bostun smashed in his nose, the wasps almost killed him, Dragan slashed him, he nearly drowned in the shaft…’

‘Don’t forget that it wouldn’t have been good for his health exactly, had you bored your sword in a little further.’

And don’t forget the worst experience of all – a murderess crow, all dressed in black, sitting on my chest with her dagger digging into my throat.

‘How do you think things might have turned out for you when I caught the pair in the library? And he is dangerous. After all – no-one has ever caused so much chaos in here before. We should lock him up.’ Karson was unforgiving. ‘For his own sake, of course,’ he added.

Rogat looked earnestly at the prince. ‘I threatened something similar to you already. Furthermore, I am troubled by the fact that you have revealed your identity to Milafine. Although, that is precisely what saved your life.’

Now the girl spoke for the first time: ‘He didn’t tell me – I found it out myself.’

‘Who else around here knows about our honoured guest?’ The sergeant seemed particularly piqued by the fact that he hadn’t been let in on the secret from the start.

‘No-one else knows,’ said Karek.

‘Hm – best if we keep it like that.’ Rogat looked at the others urgently. ‘If Duke Schohtar finds out that Prince Karek Marein is staying here, he might start thinking rather terrible thoughts.
