CHAPTER 10

The ebb and flow of the waves crashed against the ship. It didn’t smell like the rocky sea salt waves she was accustomed to or even like the freshwaters found in the Great Lake in Varen. Instead, the rotting flesh odor she had smelled earlier was a lot more intense and suffocating. Alina tried not to gag as the stench clogged her nose, leaving a bitter taste on her tongue.

She sat at the back of the ship with Fivera beside her and Zuro perched on the wooden bench between them. The ship was divided into three sections, the top deck, the middle seating area and the gremlin’s section, which was near the entrance of the ship. Alina sat at the top deck with the rest of the souls in various seats in front of her.

Their legs wobbled as the ship swayed above the waters and a sick sensation bubbled up in her stomach. Motion sickness was her greatest weakness, so she tried to breathe in deeply to stop herself from regurgitating.

She clutched her stomach and gazed around the ship. Charon stood at the helm of the ship and rotated the big wheel. The gremlins were dotted all over the ship doing odd jobs from sweeping and dusting to hoisting the sails, counting the souls, and tending the oars. Oddly enough, the row of oars pushed back in the air and never really touched the dark waters.

The ship moved away from the dock and Alina gripped the steel rod next to her as she stared at the whirlpool forming ahead. It was a lot more daunting and massive when she saw it directly in front of her versus when she stood near the docks.

Oh my, Alina thought as the ship lurched forward and her stomach sank.

“So, we’re going to drop inside there?” Alina whispered and her eyes widened.

The ship edged closer to the whirlpool, each turn creating a deafening whip that sprayed water and wind with each rotation.

“Seems like it,” Zuro said and dropped onto the floor to take cover under the seat.

He gripped his claws around the steel rod holding the benches up and cocooned himself in the shade. Fivera slid close to her and his knee brushed against her legs as he gripped the bench. A jolt of electricity sizzled through her, and her cheeks heated with embarrassment. Alina tightened her legs and shifted away from him.

“Oh, wow,” Fivera said, staring at her with a bemused expression. “Do you find me that repulsive? You know, I do shower sometimes unlike some people.”

Alina rolled her eyes but remained silent. While she didn’t find him repulsive, she had no intentions of getting too close to him. He may be slowly warming up on her, but she still didn’t trust him fully, not with his long history of lying and stealing.

He chuckled and glanced at the ship where Charon guided the large vessel into the whirlpool. A white portal formed in the center. The ship tipped forward and her body leaned down as the ship dropped into the giant portal.
