The Gospel of Luke

Written between A.D. 80-90, Luke’s Gospel portrays God as the sovereign of heaven, naming Him the Divine Father. Luke also foresaw Christ’s Second Coming. He spoke of God’s kingdom as ubiquitous and the Lord’s sympathy with universal humanity. The poor and humble would be welcome in the kingdom. All in all, his Greek is full of beauty and grace, and reflects a sense of compassion for mankind. Luke was an educated man who emphasized repentance and faith in order to receive forgiveness and merit salvation.

Characteristically, he provides the details of Jesus’ birth, baptism, and the Temptation in the wilderness. He also retraces the Galilean Ministry (4:14-9:50) thereby illustrating Christ’s healing of the broken-hearted and the recovery of those who were blind and ill.

Luke repeated the Sermon on the Mount, which names those who are blessed--the poor, the hungry, and those who suffer injustice. All shall receive their reward in heaven. Jesus concluded the Sermon with the unforgettable words:

Be you therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and you shall not be judged: condemn not, and you shall not be condemned: forgive, and you shall be forgiven.” (6:20-30, 36-37)
