Chapter 21
Holt
Waking back up to the lack of warmth Xio provided me was jolting, which was odd because I donât think Iâd ever allowed myself to actually sleep with someone.
Sex, sure, but never truly sleep.
I never felt moved to allow it, and with my status, I always worried my partners were just trying to secure themselves a prince.
Deep down, I knew I was just waiting for her.
She was my soul-bound. I knew it in every intrinsic part of my body.
She made me feel sparks beyond the electricity I could create. I couldnât believe how perfectly she fit molded against my body last night. Like she was made for me, and she was. I knew she wasnât ready to confront this, and I wasnât even sure if I was.
A soul-bound was a commitment for life, and she was still trying to figure out who she was. Not to mention the fact her mother said sheâd be the key to saving everyone.
No, we werenât ready to face it, but that didnât mean I wasnât going to spend every second I was with her, showing that I was the right choice when it came time.
Marriages in Maya lasted for days, and I found myself fantasizing about the feeling of our souls becoming one when she accepted it. The gold and silver tattoo that would adorn the space above our hearts would be my new favorite accessory.
I watched my soul-bound stretch awake, and her eyes found mine immediately like they always did.
Ever since the first time I laid eyes on her, I knew I wasnât going to be able to let her go. The way she looked at me with defiance but also curiosity had my heart jumping like she was the first female Iâd ever seen.
Thankfully, I had the excuse of her stealing from me and being a human to take her with me, but I would have found a way.
But I found myself realizing that if she had told me she never wanted to see me again once we got to the palace safely, I would have listened too.
It would have been nearly unbearable, but I would have tried for her.
She held a power over me she didnât even know. I would bring the underworld and upper world all crashing down for her.
I always thought my mother was being dramatic about the way she felt when she first saw my father.
I definitely owed her an apology.
I really hoped this plant would be able to save him. I didnât know what I would do without him. He was my rock. I couldnât imagine a world where I didnât have him to imbue wisdom into me. To stop me from doing something without thinking about it, showing me how to be a fair king.
There had been times over my last two hundred years when I behaved less than royalty should. I didnât understand at first why we couldnât just use our power to end anyone who might disagree with us.
My father explained what a privilege this power was and that the Gods gave it to us to protect and care for the Mayan folk.
