Chapter 22
Weâd decided to head to the university so that we could see what he was doing. If there was a chance we could get him without the demon mage or another Masked Kishu showing up and switching back, itâd be best for everyone.
Gavin, Silvia and I went; any bigger of a team and the kitsune might start running. Since we all knew of Gavinâs special ability, thereâd be fewer shenanigans.
I can understand now why my dog didnât like leashes. We were walking to the dorm, with Gavin as our escort, Silvia holding a leash because any sane person would react to a wolf walking the street unless they were sure someone had control over it.
The thing was uncomfortable, even if it was a harness and not just a collar around my neck. It felt like it restricted my movement and bunched up and bent my fur weirdly.
We arrived at the campus and hit our first major roadblock.
âElizabeth!â my roommate cried out, turning our chances of finding the kitsune to zero.
âWhimper.â
âElizabeth, Iâve been trying to call you all night. Why havenât you picked up?â she demanded.
My eyes lit up as I realized that my phone was⦠where did the wolf form come from again? Silvia recoiled and was bending under the pressure. I nudged her to try and get her to stand straight.
âWoof!â
âSorry, Amelia, I lost it when you were calling it. Was there any ringing sound at the dorm room?â Silvia said.
âI donât know but partway through it started to say that the number no longer existed!â
âPerhaps it was stolen, and the friends took out the sim card?â Gavin asked, shrugging his shoulders.
Amelia looked to Silvia, to me and Gavin, leaned in close to Silvia and whispered, âWhoâs this jock following you?â She sneered.
Silvia nearly punched her. âWoof!â
âUh, a member of the theatre department?â She smiled clearly, the sign of a terrible lie.
âWhatâs his name?â Amelia was in hunting mode now.
âNameâs Gavin, nice to meet you.â Gavin held out his hand.
I could smell the fear coming off Amelia. Gavin must have used something to enhance his hearing to hear the whispers.
âSo, does that mean that this fwuffy puppy is the same one used in that demonstration?â
âYes, and donât worry, she came from a farm of domesticated black wolves. None of them attack humans unless getting beaten themselves and sheâs very well trained,â Gavin said quickly, coming up with a decent lie.
âWoof.â
âThe theatre department asked me to look after her for a bit⦠in our dorm.â
âAww, itâs so cute, itâs like she thinks sheâs people!â Amelia said, petting my head.
I didnât know why, but her petting was very rough and forceful. Had there not been fur in the way Iâm sure Iâd be blushing at that point, but luckily dogs and wolves donât show much shame.
Sheâd backed up and opened the door to our room, which had two corner desks, with our laptops sharing the only outlet in the room, and two simple wooden framed beds, with ageing white paint on them.
