Chapter Nineteen
I stormed through the hall as the sounds of laughter and friendly exchanges filled my ears. My eyes caught a sleeping Charlotte before I went out the door. My brother stood up from the couch, but our aunt stopped him.
The nerve! Maybe this time a pixie wonât stop me from sulking!
âNot a pixie, darling,â Lorcanâs voice came to me again. In that very second, I stopped walking and tightened my fists.
âWhere are you?â
His body came clear to my eyes from seemingly nowhere. I stepped back and took him in. He was wearing his normal attire, but this time in a teal color. It oddly suited him.
âAre you really here?â I crossed my arms.
He shook his head. âI am projecting myself into your realm. I havenât yet left my home.â
âGood, I can tell the others not to sharpen their spears just yet.â
He laughed.
âWhy do you keep haunting me like this?â
âI was trying to have a word with you.â He had a habit of speaking with his hands. It was annoying. âI didnât mean to startle you.â
âAnd the bats?â
His brow curved. âThat was not my doing.â
âWell, what do you need to say?â
âFirstly, I wanted to be sure that you were indeed revived of the Elysian Stone.â The what? I think he could tell I had yet to hear the name. âThe stone in your hand.â
I lifted the item and held it out to see. It was sparkling then, catching every light from every corner of that dimmed grove. âYes, it⦠helped me survive.â
âAnd when I spoke to you of Samira, you knew it was the same stone, didnât you?â He lowered himself to see my eyes more clearly. I gave a nod. âWhy not show me the stone back at the castle? Why keep it hidden?â
âHonestly,â I shrugged, âI didnât know it could revive the dead until then. I thought it was only for protection.â
He nodded, his fingers pressing together at his chin. With an inhale, he glanced over the area. âThis is a nice town. Samira had many friends here.â
âAnd Iâm sure you donât.â
He didnât respond right away. âAt one time,â he nodded along, âyes, I did.â
No matter how evil Lorcan was, I couldnât help but feel bad for his loss. I knew loss, and it was the worst thing ever. Iâd never wish that upon someone. âIâm sorry she died.â I shrugged, and before I could say another word, Lorcanâs voice took the air in an urgent tone.
âAre you really?â Like in the castle, I saw the faint sign of a man who was terribly hurt, and still hurting. He was too proud to ask for help, too wicked to accept it.
âYes.â I was quick to reply. âAnd if I could help you find peace, I would.â
âPeace isnât what Iâm after.â His lips turned upward as though heâd finally seen the light at the end of his suffering.
âThen what? Samira?â
I could see how my words awoke something deep in his heart. His eyes melted from their frosty fortress as he stood with a heaviness on his shoulders.
