The Race

One of the most interesting analogies used in the Bible to describe our lives is the analogy of a race. The writer of Hebrews compared our lives to that of a marathon runner, straining for the prize ahead. Read the passage that urges us to run the race with our eyes fixed on Jesus, who is our example and who ran his race for the joy set before him: heaven (12:1–2).

We know the passage well, but many tend to attribute the goal as being Jesus here and now, rather than following Christ in running the race for what lies ahead, the joy or bliss that awaits at the right hand of God.

But there is more to this brilliant word picture. Consider the marathons you may have watched over the years. Perhaps you’ve watched portions of the Olympic marathon. Who among the runners at the Olympics trains for many months and runs long, exhausting miles without thoughts of crossing the finish line, surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses cheering?

Who among the runners of any such race train and strain for anything less than the finish line?

Who among runners endure such punishment to the body for a lesser prize than finishing or winning the race?
