CHAPTER NINETEEN

To Hell with It

Charlie’s addition of alcohol to the Transport Orb’s disorienting nausea didn’t go quite as he had hoped. While his mind hadn’t fought the twisting, yanking, and shoving sensations as it had the first time, his stomach was so relaxed that when his feet hit the ground, it immediately ejected its contents onto said ground. Well, into the water. The low tide rolled in and lapped his puke away. He took a deep breath and almost emptied his stomach again, but managed to hold things together. Charlie straightened up to see Spence ankle deep in the water lighting a cigarette and scanning the place. Meg was standing on the shore, wide-eyed and visibly shaken.

“Where are we?” Charlie asked as he wiped his mouth. How was the other guy okay after that psychedelic rollercoaster?

Spence hefted the bags on his shoulder, “Looks like Coney Island. Damn freak show.” He took a drag off his cigarette and let it seethe from his lips as he spoke, “My dad used to bring me and my sister here all the time. He loved it. He’d make us go to these . . . shows where dudes would drill things up their noses and hang weights from their nuts. Unbelievable. The man was— is? The man’s— my dad’s a monster. The world loves him, but he’s a real piece of shit.” He took a longer drag off his cigarette and ashed it into the water. “I hate this place. He owns it now. This and—” another long drag, “a bunch of other crazy little entertainment pockets. You ever go to those Renaissance faires? He owns like six of them. Two in Nowhere, Texas, a couple in Who-the-fuck-knows, Wisconsin, and now one in Oregon. I say now, but it’s been, like, a year or something.” He flicked the spent butt into the water, “Hella waste of money.”

There was a weird moment where a bit of sympathy started welling up in Charlie for the skinny guy dressed in black. Charlie knew he had some issues with his parents, with James and Harriett, but they never pulled anything like that. Maybe they weren’t perfect, but they were a far cry from monsters. They loved him and went out of their way to make sure he knew it.

“Your girl/not-your-girl looks like she’s about to pass out.”

“She’s my—” Charlie said quickly, but didn’t know where to go from there. They hadn’t discussed it.

“No label? Just checking again,” the other guy said with, what? Charlie couldn’t place it, but he felt it and it was awkward.

“That was close,” was all Meg could say for several minutes. “That was super close.”

The brave little blonde girl’s fear of water was on full display and their Travel that time had nearly pitched her right into it. The boys were fine. Both had their shoes off, so no harm. In fact, Charlie puking in the water was a hell of a lot better than on solid ground. At least this way his humiliation was washed away without a trace.
