CHAPTER 19

She swallowed hard. Keep it together, girl.

She’d been trained for this. Knew she had to give them what they wanted. Had to offer it to them and make them think she was giving in to their demands. The opportunity was being handed to her on a platter. Textbook stuff, but she didn’t think it would be presented so neatly.

“Untie my hands and give me the laptop.”

The boss jerked his head in her direction and she flinched. He was a mean-spirited one. What’d gone wrong in his life to bring him to this point? He didn’t know it, but things were about to get much, much worse for him.

“One thing at a time, little girl.”

“Wait, Mel!” Luke’s anger showed in his posture. “Take the ten minutes.”

She shook her head then turned from him. He was in pain and it was her fault. They needed to get out of here, fast. “It’s over, Luke, I don’t want the money anymore. It’s caused us enough grief. They can have it.”

Luke hissed, his pain and frustration hitting her square in the back.

She did her best to shut him out. Keep the charade going. Make them believe you’ve capitulated. Let them think they have the upper hand. The things she’d been taught about how to deal with thugs like these came back to her as easily as her Sunday school lessons.

She raised her bound hands. “Untie them.” And don’t patronise me, you bastard.

He smirked and placed a kiss on her shoulder. “Do you think we’re stupid? We picked up on the extra surveillance in Tully. It’s a small town, bitch, but we’re one step ahead of you. We’ll have the money and be outta here before they realise you’re missing.”

Luke growled behind her; she didn’t need to look to know his helplessness would be like a knife going through him.

“Gag him, Johnny.”

“No, don’t!” she begged, twisting to face Luke. God, no.

He’d only just finished telling her about his childhood trauma and his inability to breath, how the fear of dying that way was always there.

“He won’t say another word, I promise.” She pleaded silently to Luke.

“Gag him, Johnny, and give him another reminder to shut his fucking mouth.”

Melita wanted to spear his chest with a knife. Instead, she bit her bottom lip until she tasted blood. She couldn’t bear to watch Luke being kicked and punched, so she turned away—it was the hardest thing she’d ever done—and blocked out the sound of him choking. She had a job to do, but she made a promise to fix this brute good and proper. She wasn’t Thomas Van Der Meeliko’s daughter for nothing.

With a jolt she realised it was the first time she’d ever wanted to be like her father—and it was to channel his ruthlessness. A sinister smile made her lips curl.

She pressed her bound hands into the boss’s chest and demanded he untie her. He waited until Luke had been bound and gagged, kicked and punched, but he did as she bid.

The relief was sweet and she rubbed her wrists vigorously until the pain ebbed.
