Maia

“Are you absolutely sure?”

“Yes, albi?”

Maia was staring into a mirror, straightening herself up. It was time for her to go in for her shift, but Khalid?

He didn’t want to let that happen.

“You just paying me to not work is insane to me still, you know that?”

He stood behind her with a stern demeanor, dressed in a more traditional business suit. “I’m not paying you to do nothing, Maia. I’m paying you to be a mother, to live your life as you see fit.”

“By paying me to not go to work?”

“The mother of my child isn’t going to be waiting tables. Or beach chairs, or whatever you call it with that job.”

It made Maia a bit uncomfortable. She usually prided herself on being a good and hardworking employee. She wasn’t the type to take off for just any reason, and that went double for just quitting out of the blue. Dave was understanding, but he had his limits.

“Do you want me to write you the check and hand you it? Drive you to your bank of choice? How must I prove I want this for you, Maia?”

His offer did sound good. It wasn’t like she did this job because she particularly enjoyed it. She had passions she wanted to explore, just never having the window to pursue them.

Still, though, she waffled about it. It felt wrong to do this, to just accept some money from a man who claimed to be her daughter’s father.

Who claimed to be her long lost lover who she just couldn’t remember.

He placed a hand on her shoulder and nodded her way. “It’ll be alright. I assure you.”

She took a deep breath. Despite all of her worries, she realized that she could trust this man. There wouldn’t be some gotcha after all this, leaving her poor and desperate.

Which again, struck her as mad. Had she even known this guy for twenty-four hours yet?

According to him, she’d known him for years.

“Fine. I’ll go with your little offer then.”

“Excellent!” He swiftly exclaimed. “Now we can...”

“Mister Khalid?” A small child’s voice called out.

Ruby had finished breakfast and now was out and about looking for something to do.

Khalid’s place wasn’t entirely set up to entertain small children, so the specter of boredom quickly snuck up on the little girl.

“Yes, my little Ruby in the rough?” He turned to face her and then knelt down to be closer to her eye level.

“I’m bored.”

“Bored of the book I gave you?”

“It has a bunch of weird symbols in it that I can’t read.”

“You can read?” He raised an eyebrow. “I thought you would just like the pictures.”

Maia shook her head, bemused. “She can read a little bit. Like, Dr. Suess level stuff, but she isn’t going to be able to make sense of your language at all.”

“I can barely make sense out of my language at times.”

“Sounds fine to me, I don’t always get English either.”

Khalid waved Ruby over. “Alright. How do you feel about going on a big trip? A big vacation?”

“A what now?” Maia said confused.
