There is an interior, all-encompassing, luminous self, “Thou which within me art, yet Me!”—a higher center of identity that makes the self double. Traherne says, “There is in a man a Double selfe, according as He is in God, or the world” (SM II.92). In the world, man is confined, but in God, he is everywhere, the soul being “All eye and sight.” Thus, there are two kinds of sight (SM III.14), one viewing things externally with the bodily eyes, the other internally in the infinite sphere of the soul, in the “inclusive sphere” where all things are apprehended.77 It would appear that the “Endless Comprehension” of Traherne’s soul was an act of seeing, knowing, and loving that grasped infinity and eternity, his soul finding the universe within, an infinite room of treasures and joys, with “the dimensions of innumerable worlds . . . shut up” in it:

Where it should lodge such innumerable objects, as it doth by knowing, whence it should derive such infinite streams as flow from it by Loving, how it should be a mirror of all Eternity, being made of nothing, how it should be a fountain or a sun of Eternity out of which such abundant rivers flow, it is impossible to declare. (CM IV.81)
