Kitty parked in the lane and walked up the farm drive. As she entered the yard, a skinny collie hurled itself from the tractor shed and ran at her. She saw the whites of the creature’s eyes but the dog was dragged up by a chain. It fell back in the mud, snarling. Kitty knocked on the door. When there was no answer she shouted through the letterbox.

‘Carole? It’s Kitty Lockwood. From Shaftoe Leazes.’

The door opened and Carole Robb appeared, wiping her hands on her pinny. ‘I’m busy.’

‘OK. Has Kevin told you the date of his court hearing? He’s summoned to appear a week on Thursday. Careless driving.’

‘He said.’

Kitty imagined there would not be a lot of secrets Kevin could keep from his mother. ‘So, he’ll be there?’

‘Better ask him, pet. You’re as likely to see him.’

‘It’s at the magistrates’court, in town. You know where that is?’

‘Give me a clue...’ Carole looked over Kitty’s shoulder, reluctant to meet her gaze.

‘Did Kevin mention that we’d had a word with him? The other day?’

‘What about?’

‘I’m sorry. I can’t say. It was about another matter.’

‘He told me all about it.’

‘You know you mentioned that Kevin had a girlfriend?’ said Kitty.

‘Like I said. I’m very busy. Some of us have work to do.’ Carole stared into the distance.

Kitty knew she would get no further. ‘If you want to talk about it, give me a call.’

Carole Robb closed the door.

Kitty had got the reception she had expected. She felt a glimmer of pity for Carole Robb. One by one, everyone she loved was leaving her.
