Excerpt from Bob Corman audio commentary on The Shadow Glass Blu-ray (Kanon Releasing).

[00:23:12] Ahh, here he is! You know, Gurchin wasn’t in the script. As written, we were supposed to wend our way through the city of Rapell, following Dune as he slowly discovers it, but on the day we shot the sequence it just wasn’t working. I had a very sleepless night trying to figure out why.

Anyway, the next morning I was giving my son, Jack, his breakfast. He was barely two years old and so more food ended up on his face than in his mouth. He looked like something that had crawled out of a sewer and WHAMMO!

There it was, the solution. It’s funny how inspiration strikes. They say necessity is the mother of invention, but I think happy accidents are just as important to the creative process. Seeing Jack wearing his breakfast made me realise we needed a new character to lead us into Rapell, to let us know just how down and dirty it was, and in that moment Gurchin was born.

Of course, we had no time to create a new puppet for the role, and after a lot of agonising, I realised the answer was right in front of me. It seemed only right that Jack should play Gurchin.

Listen, here comes the line. ‘That’s good eatin’!’ [chuckles] We fed him a lot of chocolate cake that day. He didn’t seem to mind.
