Our gala, the way we hold court so to speak, is going on as planned tonight. I reluctantly came to agree with Sai that going forward with the party might actually be the best course of action. If we cancel suddenly, it might arouse suspicion within the community, and suspicion can lead to instability. Our mandate is to prevent that very thing.
We are the keepers of the peace.
Sai also has a point about drawing out the aggressors. Why not meet them in our territory, and in a very public setting? This way, we have all of our resources, including our extensive security set-up, at our disposal.
If my hunch is correct that the aggressors are members of my family of fae, I fear theyâll use any means necessary to get what they want. I have seen the horrors theyâve been capable of before. We will need every advantage possible.
From my perch in the rooftop idol garden, I have a prime vantage point. I see the party fill out and unfold below, and more importantly, Iâm able to keep an eye out for anything remotely conspicuous. Even if someone is using an illusionary spell to hide their identity, I can sense the aura as it shifts through the space below. This is especially true if the person in question is a fae, one of my own from the other realm. But to my surprise, the party is looking pretty fae free this evening, and the air is peaceful tonight.
Curious, indeed.
A contingent from each faction is required to attend each event. Each group must have representation at court at all times. This is the way things have been conducted for ages, and it will continue to be so for as long as I serve.
Perhaps I should investigate more closely. I need to hear what others are saying, find out if the other groups have already noticed this lack of fae folk as acutely as I have. It would be a problem if so. We canât have everyone questioning the necessity to show their faces here.
I regret having to leave the sanctuary of my beloved garden, but my descent into the crowd below seems necessary. I weave in and out among the guests, the usual folks we see weekly. Truthfully, I mostly try to keep to myself, observing from afar, but there are a few people I genuinely enjoy sharing conversation with. Kieran, one of these friends, is nursing a drink by himself at the bar, and I make my way over.
Kieranâs a shifter, a were-cat. I like speaking with him because heâs upfront and honest. Heâs one of the few guests that attends these gatherings who isnât putting on some sort of facade or trying to brown-nose his way to a certain standing in the community. He also has ears on the ground about the goings on, a skill that could be particularly useful tonight. I wonder if he might have heard any rumblings from around the city.
Heâs facing away from me, towards the bar, but hears me approach.
