The Seminole had a new leader, Osceola. He led raids on white farms and settlements. The Seminole also attacked a military supply train, killing eight guards. On December 28, 1835, US Major Francis Dade marched his men from Fort Brooke to Fort King in Florida. Some 180 Seminole warriors attacked, killing 100 soldiers. Only one man survived the attack. That same day, Osceola and his men killed the government agent, General Wiley Thompson. This started a new war that would last for 7 years as a series of US generals tried and failed to defeat the Seminole.
