No More Fun & Carnival Games

Police sirens blared in the distance as ambulance and fire truck lights spun in bright warning circles around Simone, Astrid, Claudia, and Oscar. Kane pulled up in an unmarked car, and Astrid didn’t know if the dark blue Ford Explorer looked to be standard police colors attempting to mimic an “everyday” car. Still, Astrid hadn’t seen any others in Shadow’s Bluff around, so she also mused that it could have been Kane’s personal car.

Currently, Kane, Oscar, and Simone were deep in a conversation. They were waiting for the Crescent Valley police chief, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), and the MPA (Magical Protection Agency) to come. Each organization from the government had its own way of dealing with crises. And they were working to figure out how to cross over with the impending deadline of the town disappearing for six more months.

Mayor Waverly’s suit was now in full sunset colors. Astrid noted that the hem of her pants also began to show hints of nightshades. As beautiful as the suit was, it was also nerve-wracking to see how it changed as time drew on and how many things they still needed to accomplish before they would end up stuck in the town for good.

A lump swelled in Astrid’s throat. “We’re wasting time,” she hissed at Claudia, whose eyes flicked to Astrid. She nodded in agreement but didn’t say anything because they were interrupted by a man and woman, each wearing government badges. Although their names were too small on their badges for Astrid to see, and they didn’t introduce themselves, Astrid decided to call them Jones and Smith.

“I’m from the EPA.” Jones (the man) said. “I need to ask you some questions regarding what you found.” He looked at his clipboard. “Unfortunately, it has to be here. We need to make sure that the environmental ramifications of the . . . um . . . situation.”

“I am from the MPA,” Smith (the woman) said. “As my colleague disclosed, we cannot relocate due to time constraints. Provisions will be added to ensure cleanup occurs in the next six months.” Astrid guessed that meant some agents would stay in Crescent Valley for a while. “But we need some preliminary information from you to get started.”

Jones and Smith moved Astrid and Claudia to the side. Each questioned the other individually and asked them the same questions. Thankfully, it didn’t last as long as Astrid feared, and when she was almost done answering questions, Oscar caught her eye.

He looked sideways at where to meet him after she was done.

The second thing Astrid was grateful for was the questions about why they were in the quarry when they found the unbottled, unrefined energy. Smith and Jones didn’t seem concerned with that, which was nice because that would open up another layer of questions Astrid wasn’t sure she wanted to answer.

It wasn’t that she wanted to impede any investigation, and she was positive, more than ever, that Gavina was some kind of collateral damage in the coverup of what was happening in Crescent Valley.
