Breakfast

Axel woke up the next morning to Val rushing them all out of bed. “Come on, come on, it’s time for breakfast,” she yelled cheerfully.

“But you can’t cook,” Dèlon said, acting confused as he got up. Syn bopped him on the back of his head as he walked by. “Hey,” Dèlon said dramatically, reaching for the spot.

“You asked for that too,” Axel said playfully as he came out of his room. Isaac laughed as Dèlon let out a sly smile.

They emerged from their dwellings in the corner to the sight of monks walking to and fro with plates of food in their hands. Small groups sat in circles scattered throughout the common area. Axel’s stomach nudged at him as he caught the scent of cooked food. It smelled of cooked fish and of lemon and butter.

“They should be here soon with our plates. I already talked to them,” Val said.

They found a spot to their liking and sat down in a circle. Axel looked around curiously for a moment. “Where’s Ingram?” he asked.

“I don’t know,” Val said. “He wasn’t in his room when I checked.” Syn, Isaac, and Dèlon all shook their heads, they didn’t know either.

The monk Val had talked to returned with others in tow, each carrying a plate of food and a set of wooden utensils. It was some kind of seasoned fish with lemon slices placed on top, served with rice. It looked, and smelled, utterly delicious. They thanked the monks kindly before they dug into their meals. Axel and Val smiled as they watched Isaac and Dèlon cherish each bite. It was a meal the likes of which none of them had ever had.

“So,” Axel said, looking to each of them, “what do you guys think?” He gestured to the temples around them.

“This place is like heaven on Earth,” Dèlon said with food in his mouth.

Isaac looked around. “It’s still hard to believe it’s real. I never imagined anything like this. I don’t ever want to leave.”

Axel felt a pang of sadness flow through him. He thought of Lucinder and the end of days, so close even though here it seemed so far away. He shoved away the sense of impending doom.

“I second that,” said Dèlon after he gulped down his bite. “We can stay here forever.”

Axel paused. “I hope we can too.” He looked guiltily toward Syn, who met his eyes with his stoic expression. He pointed Axel to something with his eyes. Axel turned to see the soldiers of the White Kingdom sitting not far from them. One man in particular caught his eye. The man had broad shoulders and a long, prominent mane of hair. Axel faded from the conversation as Val, Dèlon, and Isaac talked of interesting things they’d seen. He waited until the soldiers finished their plates and then excused himself from the group.

He approached the soldiers cautiously, not knowing which one was the king. He noticed many of them stiffen as he approached. The only one still relaxed was the one with the mane of hair.
