It was Saint-Quentin, folÂlowed by the capÂtain, who found Dorothy; and at the sight of her blood-smeared face, they were nearÂly beÂside themÂselves.
âSiÂlence,â she comÂmandÂed, to cut short their quesÂtions. âYes, Iâm woundÂed. But itâs a mere nothÂing. Run to the Baron, capÂtain; catch hold of GoÂliath, pat him, and take off his colÂlar. In the colÂlar, you will find beÂhind the metÂal plate, on which his name is enÂgraved, a pockÂet, formÂing a linÂing to it and conÂtainÂing the metÂal weâre lookÂing for. Bring it to me.â
The boy hurÂried off.
âSaint-Quentin,â Dorothy conÂtinÂued. âHave the deÂtecÂtives seen me?â
âNo.â
âYou must give evÂeryÂone to unÂderÂstand that I left the Manor some time ago and that youâre to meet me at the marÂket-town, Roche-sur-Yon. I donât want to be mixed up with the inÂquiry. Theyâll exÂamÂine me; and it will be a sheer waste of time.â
âBut MonÂsieur DavÂerÂnoie?â
âAs soon as you get the chance, tell him. Tell him that Iâve gone for reaÂsons which I will exÂplain latÂer, and that I beg him to keep silent about evÂeryÂthing that conÂcerns us. BeÂsides, he is woundÂed, and his mind is conÂfused, and noÂbody will think about me. Theyâre goÂing to hunt through the hillocks, I exÂpect, to get hold of dâEsÂtreÂichÂerâs conÂfedÂerÂates. They mustnât see me. CovÂer me with branchÂes.â
âThatâs all right,â she said when he had done so, âAs soon as it is getÂting dark, come, all four of you, and carÂry me down to the carÂaÂvan; and weâll start as soon as itâs dayÂlight. PerÂhaps I shall be out of sorts for a few days. Rather too much overÂwork and exÂciteÂmentânothÂing for you to worÂry about. Do you unÂderÂstand, my boy?â
âYes, Dorothy.â
As she had foreÂseen, the two deÂtecÂtives, havÂing shut up dâEsÂtreÂichÂer at the Manor, passed at no great disÂtance from her, guidÂed by one of the farm-serÂvants. She presentÂly heard them callÂing out and guessed that they had disÂcovÂered the enÂtrance to the caves of the Labyrinth, down which dâEsÂtreÂichÂerâs conÂfedÂerÂates had fled.
âPurÂsuit is useÂless,â murÂmured Dorothy. âThe quarÂry has too long a start.â
She felt exÂhaustÂed. But for nothÂing in the world would she have yieldÂed to her lasÂsiÂtude beÂfore the reÂturn of the capÂtain. She asked Saint-Quentin how the atÂtack had come to be so long deÂlayed.
âAn acÂciÂdent, wasnât it?â
âYes,â said he. âThe deÂtecÂtives made a misÂtake about the inn; and the farm-serÂvants were late getÂting back from the fête. It was necÂesÂsary to colÂlect the whole lot; and the car broke down.â
MontÂfauÂcon came runÂning up. Dorothy went on:
âPerÂhaps, Saint-Quentin, thereâll be the name of a town, or rather of a château, on the medal. In that case, find out all you can about the route and take the carÂaÂvan there. Did you find it, capÂtain?â
âYes, mumÂmy.â
âGive it to me, pet.â
What emoÂtion Dorothy felt when she touched the gold medal so keenÂly covÂetÂed by them all, which one might reckÂon the most preÂcious of talÂisÂmans, as the guarÂanÂtee even of sucÂcess!
It was a medal twice the size of
