Leo had arranged a cremation for his father, and Paige felt obliged to attend, if not only to try and gather more information. She knew the Lemmys would probably be in attendance, and many of Eckland’s other friends.

She wondered if Jade or any of Eckland’s former ‘assistants’ might attend.

The wake was at The Rectory. Luckily, the July weather was still good enough to have a gazebo in the garden for the majority of the guests to congregate outside. Paige sat by herself on a garden bench, fanning herself with her programme of service from the crematorium. The service had been blessedly short, given the extreme heat and the number of sweating people crammed in there. Leo had spoken a few tearful words. Arlene still seemed dazed and confused, aware of Eckland’s death but not fully comprehending the consequences of it.

Paige sat scanning the guests. Leo was going around, shaking hands and gratefully receiving flowers or cards for his mum. Arlene was sat inside the sunroom, apparently in a conversation with women of similar age, but not engaging with them at all.

Paige felt fingers grasp tightly around her arm and pull her sideways. The motion launched her from the bench, and she turned to face whoever had so rudely tugged on her, seeing Elaine Lemmy stood in front of her.

“Come with me,” Elaine whispered, tightening her already vice-like grip on Paige’s arm and leading her down a pathway that lead to the bottom of the garden where Arlene had a small veg patch. Paige was surprised that such a fragile looking older woman could be so forceful; her nails were digging into Paige’s arm and she pulled at her with strength fuelled by pure determination. Paige snatched her arm away as they rounded a hedge, scratch marks striping her forearm.

“Ow!” She said, squaring up to Elaine. She was no more than 5-foot-tall, even in her kitten heels.

“Stop whining, you’re fine. But, you won’t be if you don’t listen to me,” Elaine barked, any politeness fading away as she peered around the edge of the hedge, keeping an eye on the rest of the garden.

“What is that supposed to mean?” Paige said, exasperated more than frightened. She wondered if Elaine might be about to reveal something about Eckland, but the look on her face seemed more disdainful than fearful.

“It means that you’ve been very stupid!” Elaine wagged a finger at her, and Paige almost laughed at the absurdity of her threatening point.

“Excuse me?” Paige replied, moving backwards slightly as the index finger extended towards her.

“You were Hugh’s newbie,” Elaine continued, voice dropping any of its usual kindness.

“I worked for him, yes,” Paige said.

“I’ve seen you with Leonard,” Elaine said.

Leonard? Paige thought with confusion, before realising ‘Leo’ must be a shortening of ‘Leonard’.

“I’ve seen you with him and I think you’re very stupid!” She used the word again like a weapon, vitriol crammed into it, “He’s dangerous. You shouldn’t listen to a word that little bastard has to say.”

Paige was flabbergasted. She stood open-mouthed, brain reeling with how to reply to the claim.
