Rather like Span Homes, Eichler tracts were also conceived with an awareness of ‘community’. Joseph Eichler believed in diverse neighbourhoods and adopted a policy of non-discrimination, while also adding parks and community centres to larger estates. The majority of the Eichler tracts are situated around San Francisco, but there are also developments in Southern California and Palm Springs. One of the largest tracts was in San Mateo County, where ‘The Highlands’ grew to a community of 700 Eichler Homes, including an experimental steel-framed version. The company was a great success during the Fifties and early Sixties, until eventually Eichler began to overextend himself, and the business went bankrupt in 1967. It was a sad end to a great idea and ideal, yet there is a strong physical legacy within the stock of Eichler Homes, along with the design ideas and social principles that Joseph Eichler explored in his work.
