Chapter 5

How do you tool up against a fear demon? Not with silver bullets and armour plating, that was for sure. All the late night vampire movie marathons were no use to her. Throwing popcorn would be about as effective.

Permilia rooted around noisily in her kitchen cupboard. She brought out several fat syringes, the kind a vet might inject a horse with.

“Liquid courage. Use it on yourself as a last resort.”

“Alcohol?”

“Alcohol, foxglove, mandrake, hemlock, a bunch of other stuff. It’s a cocktail of some of the strongest poisons. It's enough to kill a human, so it'll knock your mortal side out for a while so that Veishti can't feed off it.”

“Feed? Off me?”

Permilia gave Kenssie a withering look. “How did you ever survive childhood? Yes, off you, Princess Precious. Why else have part-human thralls, if not to snack on?”

Kenssie felt her colour rise. Rakmanon would never do that to her, would he? Surely she'd know about it.

“Here,” Permilia said.

The witch handed her a dozen syringes and she put them in her hip bag. It was time to go fight for thrall rights.

“What's your plan?” Kenssie asked.

“Go in. Don't get killed. Don't panic. Inject as many of his thralls as possible, then get them out of his range so he can't keep his hold over them.”

She gulped, wondering what their chances were. She didn't like Veishti, she wanted to get back at the council for humiliating her, and someone had been stripping her powers. If she could stop him murdering his thralls, that was only right. But she wasn't sure she had it in her to defy a powerful higher demon.

“You look scared,” Permilia said. “Don't be, it'll be fun.”

“How do you work that out?”

“Because if it isn't, we'll both be chow.”
