Nine - "You'll be joining us"
Mehlis woke with a start, her heart racing and mind in a panic. A fear gripped her, and it took her a moment to remember where she was. She turned, suddenly aware she didn't feel Leneth at her back, only to see he was gone from the bed. She sat up, pulling the blanket around herself, trying to remember if he'd even been there with her.
After what seemed like several minutes, she slowly came back to reality, not remembering what had startled her awake.
They'd sat in the main room for perhaps another hour, talking and finishing their ale, before heading to bed. Leneth had come with her to her room, and it hadn't been long after that before they'd ended up in bed again, his rough hands touching her, holding her against him once more. She'd wondered if he'd still be interested in her after learning who she was, but he hadn't even mentioned it.
She could tell something was bothering him. He'd held her tighter than before, seemed to need her touch more. She'd gladly given him everything she could, each moment only strengthening their bond. They'd finally fallen asleep wrapped in each other's arms, their bodies still as close as possible. There were no whispers of love or a serious relationship. What they shared was still out of friendship, and she was fine with that and knew he was too. She knew she wasn't ready for anything that emotionally involved, and appreciated the fact that he wasn't wanting anything on that level either.
She realized the lamp had been lit and turned down low. She reached over and turned it up, looking around the room. Len's armor was still there, leaning against the small table against the far wall, but his clothes and sword were gone.
She blinked the last of the sleep from her mind, then got up and dressed. Pulling her sword over her head and arm, she left the room, heading for the front of the inn. Seeing no one there, she went back for her cloak, then went outside, looking around for any sign of Leneth. It would be dawn soon, and the light in the sky was a faint grey, the clouds from the previous night's rain still hanging overhead. She checked the stable first, but his horse was still there and there was no sign he'd been there.
Leaving the stable, she walked around toward the back, starting to get a little concerned. She wasn't prepared for what she saw as she came around the building, though.
Tabari and Leneth stood a short distance away. Leneth had his sword drawn, but Tabari didn't. They stood a short distance from each other, but side by side, and were walking through a precise routine of steps and movements with their arms and legs. Leneth used his sword, making controlled, focused swings and blocks, while Tabari went through the exact same moves with his empty hands. Their movements were in perfect unison, the shifting stances choreographed to flow naturally from one to another.
