TWENTY-ONE
âCarpenter?â George Mudie frowned as he worked, fixing type into the blocks. His fingers moved quickly and confidently. Simon watched, transfixed by his assurance. âNo,â he said eventually, âI donât know anyone with that name. Whatâs he done?â
âYouâre better off if I donât say, George.â When Mudie gave him a curious look, Simon continued, âIâm not making light of it. Some things shouldnât be said in good company.â
âAll right,â he agreed reluctantly. He thrived on news and the gossip.
âYouâll learn it all later. Everyone will.â
No luck there. No luck anywhere, it seemed. Finally, standing in the coaching office, one of the clerks raised his head.
âDid you say Carpenter, sir?â
âYes.â Simon felt a surge of hope. âDo you know him?â
âThereâs a gentleman called Carpenter who sometimes sends a package on the coach to London.â He blinked behind his spectacles. His right hand was curled like a claw from holding a pen each day and his shirt cuff stained blue with ink. Middle-aged, with hair beginning to pull back from his forehead and turn grey, he looked like a sober, honest man.
âA gentleman?â That was a jolt. Heâd expected someone dark and furtive.
âHeâs always mounted. A good animal, too.â More blinking. âI grew up on a farm, sir. I know a little about horses.â
A horse ⦠They needed space. The countryside.
âCan you tell me anything else about him?â Simon produced a shilling. âWhere does he live?â
The clerkâs face flushed. His fingers fidgeted together as he eyed the money and considered his reply.
âI donât know. I never had any need to ask. Heâs definitely not a rich man, I can tell you that. Always wears the same clothes when he comes and theyâre a bit worn. But his face has the look of spending a lot of time in the weather.â
âA farmer?â
The man shook his head. âNo, I donât believe so.â He blinked again. âIâm not sure why, sir. He doesnât seem like one, thatâs all.â
âHow old is he? What does he look like?â
When the clerk hesitated, Simon added another sixpence.
âProbably close to forty, sir. Around my age. A long face, and a large nose. Fair hair, but thereâs not too much of it left. Heâs short, probably not much more than a few inches over five feet.â A hurried, nervous smile. âYou learn to judge height in this job, sir. How many people can squeeze inside a coach.â
âVery good. Youâre observant.â He handed over the money. âWhen was he last here?â
The clerk pursed his lips and thought for a long time. âItâs been a while, sir. Early autumn, I think.â
âThank you.â
Sheer luck. If the clerk hadnât overheard, heâd still be groping around. But sometimes luck smiled. He felt sure this was the right man. Not what heâd expected, but it worked with what they knew. Now they had to find this place.
Jane bought two pies from Kate and strode over to Sallyâs room. The girl unlocked the door and sat silently as she ate.
âHowâs your hip?â
Sally shrugged. âA little better. Still hurts.â
âAny regrets about last night?â
She lifted her head, astonished by the question.
