Before bed, I tried calling Warren again but got no answer. I was sitting on the edge of Nathan's childhood bed, staring at the phone in my hand when Fury walked out of the bathroom in a Ron Jon T-shirt and a pair of men's boxer shorts. I wondered who they belonged too.
"I'll take the floor," she said, pulling a pillow out from under the comforter.
I didn't look up.
"What's with you?" she asked.
"I can't get ahold of Warren." I put the phone on the nightstand. "It's almost been two days, and it's not like him to not check in."
"So?" She was serious.
"What if something happened to him?"
She smirked. "And what's the worst that could happen? He's already dead."
That hurt, but she was right.
I pulled down the covers. "You don't have to sleep on the floor. There's plenty of room up here."
"No thanks. I don't sleep with women anymore."
My eyes widened, and I swallowed. Hard. I was glad my back was turned.
"Knock, knock," Nathan said behind me. I turned around, and he was standing in the doorway. "Just checking to see if either of you need anything before I turn in."
"Is there an extra blanket somewhere?" Fury asked.
"Yeah." He crossed the room to the closet and returned a second later with a folded blue blanket. "Here you go," he said, handing it to her.
"Thanks."
Nathan touched my arm. "You good?"
"Yes. Thank you. This was a good idea. Your family's good for the soul."
He smiled. "Yeah, they are."
"What's the plan for tomorrow?" I asked.
"The game is all I know on the agenda," he said.
"When's that?"
"The first one starts at six."
"OK." I sat down on the bed. "Hey, have you heard from Warren?"
He shook his head. "Not in a few days. Why?"
"I still haven't heard back from him."
"Maybe that's a good thing. Maybe that means he's onto something."
A tiny flicker of hope danced in my heart.
Fury laughed as she settled on her back. "I doubt it."
Nathan rolled his eyes. "If you need anything, I'm right next door." He stopped at the door on his way out. "Want me to kill the light?"
I flipped on the bedside lamp. "Please."
He turned off the overhead fixture. "Goodnight, ladies."
"Night," Fury muttered.
"Goodnight, Nathan," I said with a smile.
He winked and closed the door behind him.
"I'll never understand why the hell Warren leaves you with him all the time," Fury said.
"Warren trusts Nathan."
"He shouldn't."
"Kinda like I shouldn't trust you?"
"You don't trust me."
Fair enough.
I laid down, pulled Nathan's comforter up to my chin, and turned off the lamp. "Can I ask you a question?"
"No."
"Azrael trusts you. He says with you around, Abaddon will leave me alone. Why is that?"
She groaned and didn't answer.
"You might as well tell me. Otherwise, I'll just keep talking."
"When Abaddon took my sister, he was cursed somehow. His powers don't work around me anymore. So the last place he would want to be is around you and your power to kill him with no way to defend himself."
"But he was at the cemetery battle in Chicago," I said.
