After a while he managed to totter back into the club. He saw Judy in a corner with the negro. He started to approach her, but then thought better of it. He wondered just what Shirley had said to Judy. Whatever it was, it must have been the same thing she said to all his girlfriends. He knew there wasn’t much point in approaching Judy. It would only unnerve him to see the wild look come into her beautiful face and listen to the little moaning sounds she would make.

Despairingly he went and sat down in one of the seats near the stage.

After a while the band came back and began to play. Lost in a sea of sound, Cornell sat there in a daze.

Next to him a soft arm, clad in a light silk jacket of pastel paisley, moved slightly in time to the music. He hardly noticed it.

For the moment, at least, his interest in women was gone.

His main object in life was now to stay away from Shirley for a while. There was something definitely occult in the way she managed to find his girlfriends almost as soon as he had met them. There was something that smacked of black magic in the way she managed to scare them off once she had found them.

The beat was 4/4, but Jerry trembled in 7/8.
