Chapter Twelve

Mia watched Kirby walk back into his classroom, feeling like she’d stepped on his foot or knocked all the books off his desk, or done something small and petty that she should feel ashamed for. Logically, she knew she hadn’t done anything. Well, anything other than show up at his workplace first thing in the morning with her ex-boyfriend in tow. And there was something about having a couple of middle school girls giggling at her before Kirby had a chance to shoo them into the classroom that took Mia right back to the place where she felt like she was one of them.

“What a tool,” Luke said, just as she was sinking into the worst of her feelings of guilt. He walked past her, grabbing the sleeve of her coat to prompt her to come with him.

“Excuse me?” Mia snapped. She shook out of his grip and picked up her pace, extra Annie poster tucked under her arm, so she didn’t feel like she was following Luke wherever he wanted to go.

“Real subtle of him.” Luke tossed a resentful look over his shoulder. “Bringing up his parents and bragging that you met them.”

“He wasn’t bragging about anything,” Mia said, pausing at the end of the hall to hang the last poster on the announcement board there. The school had given them permission to put up a few posters to get the kids excited, but they hadn’t been keen on the idea of two non-school personnel people wandering the halls for long. “I met his parents because I was at Kirby’s house for supper last night and they showed up early.”

“Yeah, I bet,” Luke grumbled. They walked on, heading for the exit and nodding to the secretary in her office as they left. “If you ask me, he probably staged the whole thing.”

Mia let out a disbelieving laugh and shook her head. “If you believe that, it’s only because you haven’t met his parents.” She paused as they reached Luke’s car and got in. Once she was settled and Luke started the car, she went on with, “Actually, you’d probably love his parents. They’re just your type.”

“Oh?” Luke asked, seemingly genuinely interested. “How so?”

Mia set him a flat, sideways look. “They’re meddling, entitled WASPs.”

Luke returned her look with a sideways one. “Thanks, Mia. Thanks.”

“Is there a part of that description that you don’t identify with, Mr. Main Line lawyer wannabe?” Mia fired back.

To her surprise, instead of making another snarky comment, Luke took a deep breath and seemed to marshal his thoughts before saying, “I’m really sad that you see me that way.”

Mia blinked. A twist of unease wormed its way through her that wasn’t all that different from the guilt she felt about showing up at Kirby’s workplace with Luke. Asshole Luke she could handle. Nice guy Luke made her question everything she thought she knew, especially how she felt about him.

At the same time, she could hear Milo’s voice—and Sara’s voice—in her head screaming at her not to fall for Luke’s old tricks.
