The advantage of being a vampire was enhanced hearing.

Jin grimaced as he listened to Greyson and Holly in the other room, knowing he probably shouldn’t eavesdrop, and knowing she’d probably tell him everything later, anyway.

He lounged on the couch as he heard Holly turn off the clothes dryer, then hand Greyson back his stuff. Then the bathroom door opened and shut with a bang.

The water began flowing as Holy returned to the lounge room.

“Put the magical water guy in the shower,” he said. “That’s clever.”

“It’ll keep him here a little longer,” Holly hissed. “If something is going to happen, I’d rather be here to help him than leave him out there to deal with it on his own.”

Her expression darkened for a moment, then softened.

“What?” Jin prodded.

“I’m going to give the money to the mayor,” she declared.

“Are you sure that’s wise? He’s a bit of a gold-digger.”

“It’ll give people something else to talk about. MacIntosh was right. This town needs a distraction, and a party is the fastest way to divert attention away from this mess. If something happens with the shadow or Greyson, then no one will be watching.”

“You have a point.”

Holly picked up the jar of rice and took out Greyson’s phone. “Did it dry out?”

“It was never wet,” Jin drawled. “It was a cover story.”

“Okay, so did your inappropriate snooping uncover anything?”

“Just that sketchy video of the shadow creature.”

“So, he is just a guy looking for answers…”

“Did you do your little witchy spell?”

Holly nodded. “When I handed him his clothes, I tested for Legacy. There was nothing there, so he’s definitely not a witch.”

Jin pressed his finger to his lips as he heard the shower turn off. “A winter carnival, huh? What if it rains?”

“I’m sure somebody’ll put up a tarp.”

They looked up as Greyson appeared in the doorway, his backpack slung over his shoulder.

“Is that my phone?” he asked.

Holly handed him the jar. “Yeah, it seems okay. I don’t think much water got in it.”

“Thanks.” He picked out his phone and set the rice back on the coffee table.

“Maybe you should go to the hospital,” she added. “It looked like you took quite a tumble out there. You were out of it for a while.”

“It’d be wise to rule out a head injury,” Jin told him. “Those things can come back and get you when you least expect it.”

Greyson narrowed his eyes. “I feel fine. I just want to go back to my motel room and sleep it off.”

“Your funeral,” he stated with a shrug. “But I’ll give you a ride. Wouldn’t want you getting lost on the way back.”

“I’ll just call a taxi.”

“Greyson,” Holly murmured. “Let us help you.”

He shook his head and unlocked his phone. After a few taps on the screen, he slid it into his coat pocket. “They’re on their way. I’ll wait outside.”

“Don’t be silly,” Holly said. “It’s freezing out.”

Jin put a hand on her arm. “If he wants to wait outside, let him wait outside.”

Greyson backed towards the door. “Thank you again for your help.
