Even with all of the various types of performances that had been added to the Fourth of July celebration throughout the years, clowns remained an entertainment mainstay decades after the original Fourth of July show began. This photograph shows Heide Karp entertaining the crowd with a large ball at the 1986 Rose Bowl circus show. (Photograph by Barrett Stinson; courtesy of PHM, PSN Collection.)

After the Osmonds singing group refused to perform at the 1984 Fourth of July celebration, the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee became one of the new sponsors of the event. To salute the Olympics, the LA Lights Rhythmic Gymnastic team performed a routine that introduced the crowd to the new Olympic event. The photograph below features Cara Walker performing rhythmic gymnastics using a long silk ribbon. Adding a gymnastics component to the program allowed local residents to see the sport at the Rose Bowl even though the gymnastic Olympic events held that same summer were at a different venue in Los Angeles.
