Chapter

Twenty-Four

Harlan wasn’t in his office, and I was relieved. I’d been prepared to take on whoever I found first, but I was really hoping it wouldn’t be Harlan.

Logan was easier to track down. She was in the kitchen, polishing an oxblood leather saddle. It must be the custom one Harlan had commissioned for me, and it was beautiful. For a second, I forgot why I’d been looking for Logan in the first place.

“When did it arrive?” I asked, running a hand along the seat and up to the pommel.

“Yesterday,” she grinned. “We thought you could test it this morning.”

We. Right. The reason I’d been looking for her came flooding back.

“Can we talk?”

If she noticed the change in my tone, she didn’t react.

“Sure. You want to go for a walk outside? It’s a beautiful day.”

“Okay, yeah, sure.”

We went out the kitchen door and started to make our way toward the front of the house, where Griff was sunning herself on the lawn. She lazily turned her head to look at us as we approached, and then mewled like an oversized cat.

“She’s such a baby,” Logan moaned, but she reached out a hand to scratch behind Griff’s ear anyway. “So,” she said, looking up at me. “What’s up?”

“I wanted to talk to you about my dad.”

“Ah.” She nodded knowingly. “Tanner told you he saw us this morning. We went down early to try to avoid everyone, but that man rises with the birds.”

“So, it’s true? You and my dad are…” My lips clocked out and refused to do any more work for the day.

“Harlan and I are…” She searched for the right words and came up with, “Enjoying one another’s company, yes.”

“Logan!”

She cringed. “Sorry! I panicked. What do you want me to say? That we’re having se –”

“No!” I yelled. “No, definitely not that. Eew.” I shuddered and shimmied like I was trying to shake a spider off.

“Grayer, I know this is weird for you –”

“Weird?” I gaped at her. “Weird? Weird is finding out that you put syrup on your grilled cheese, Loges. You told me nothing was happening.”

“That was before. But then Izzy was taken, and Tucker was turned, and Sawyer… Well, you know, and we figured life is just too damned short to waste it. You never know what disaster is waiting around the next bend.”

I knew that. More than I wanted to.

“What happened to Cassidy? I thought you and she were…”

“That was just casual. Cassie and I are friends, that’s all.”

“So, Harlan’s not casual?”

She didn’t reply.

I groaned in frustration and she noticed, because the corners of her mouth started to lift.

“Don’t you dare!” I stabbed my finger in her chest.

“Sorry.” She adopted a suitably somber expression yet still managed to look like the cat who got the cream.

“I’m going to be sick.”

“I’m sorry, Grayer!” She was trying desperately not to laugh, and I was close to joining her.

“You don’t look it.”

“I know.”

“Argh! This is so not cool. He’s my dad. My dad!”

“I know.”

“I mean, how am I supposed to act around you guys?”

“Like you always act!”

“You say that as if it’s easy to do.
