Chapter Ten

We head to the casino later that night, and I can’t stop thinking about Ryder and his touch from earlier...and last night.

Music and the sound of slot machines echo around me as I walk from table to table. I’m wearing a black silk gown with a plunging neckline, my hair curled loosely and resting on the tops of my breasts. My heels click and I make sure to swing my hips a bit more as I walk. I’ve noticed when a woman acts more feminine, meek or dainty in situations like these, men feel more powerful and will likely give a better tip.

I watch Ryder, sitting straight backed with his cards in hand. His dark eyes scan all of the players and he grins. I don’t know if he’s bluffing in his game or not, and it puts a sour feeling in my stomach. How can I trust a player who always wears his best poker face?

Kenia and I get along well the more used to each other we become. She is very sweet and helpful.

When I stop by one of the tables, the men all eye me hungrily. I pretend I don’t notice, but intuition is telling me to walk away now.

“I’m sorry, I think I forgot something,” I say and then go to walk away, but one grabs me by the wrist, yanking me back toward him. I collide into his chest, and he drags his hands down my body, groping my ass. I stiffen and push at his chest and he chuckles.

“You walk around flaunting your curves, and expect us not to touch?” he asks.

“Excuse me for thinking I could wear a dress and not be groped—”

I’m cut off when the man is thrown to the floor. Ryder is towering over him, lip curled and chest heaving. The man tries to get up but Ryder places his boot on his chest, pinning him down. “Say you’re sorry,” Ryder snarls.

The man glares up at us and purses his lips together defiantly, like a scolded child.

Ryder presses his foot down a little harder, and the man gasps for air. “Say it.”

The man glares at us, but then his mouth opens. “Sorry,” he says, and Ryder takes his foot off the man's chest and then grabs my hand, guiding me away.

We go into that dark hallway that leads to the secret entrance and he cages me in between his arms, staring down at me intently. “Are you okay?” His deep voice is almost a growl.

“Yes,” I breathe.

His nose skims the side of my face, inhaling deeply. “I should’ve killed him. Next person to put their hands on you, they're dead.”

Then his lips find mine. It starts out soft but quickly turns frantic. I cup his cheeks before trailing my hands down to his broad chest, feeling every plane of hard muscle tense at my touch.

He wraps his thick arms around my middle, hands gripping my ass, and I moan into his mouth.

His tongue strokes mine, tasting me, and giving me promises of what's to come.
