Now that you’re dead, the only life that comes from me is new thoughts of you – poison fungi springing out of the decay of all those old growth forests we slept in, watered by my tears and growing in the darkness of my fear that you would still be alive if you hadn’t met me. That is what your sister thinks. She told me so tonight. But she doesn’t know how we lay by your river and stared at Mars, the tiny red dot that holds all of humanity’s hope, or the way your heart beat the end of my universe as I wondered at all the possibilities one moment can contain, at the right or wrong of our choice. It was after that our world started to tip – did you notice? It wasn’t spoken, more like a truth that dried like cement on my skin, burning and rupturing the epidermis as we worked side by side building a bunker to protect us from this frightening new world. What a joke. Nothing can protect us.
