CHAPTER NINE

I HADN’T SEEN a ghost, but I’d seen enough of my aunt’s stuff for one day, that was for certain. A nice relaxing evening at home might be just what the doctor ordered after the events of the last couple of days.

My body was tired, but my mind was whirling with ideas about the identity of the dead man. Who was this “Ray?” Was it someone my aunt knew? Is there a chance that it isn’t even connected? There was a possibility, of course, that the bracelet had been dropped by a previous tenant, or even a moving man. There was no way my sweet old aunt had physically transported all of those goodies in there herself. She must have had help—labor from someone—and even a moving truck for some of those items. The station wagon I inherited from her was large, and good for shopping, but it wasn’t big enough to fit some of those chairs inside.

“Meow?”

My cat was waiting for me on the porch swing when I came home. He enjoyed the change of seasons more than anyone.

“Soaking up the last of the rays?” I scratched him under the chin and smiled as he purred into my hand. “Can’t blame you for that. It’s not bad out here.” I left him in peace and headed for the kitchen.

My first stop was the refrigerator, and the cheesecake stashed inside it. I always made sure I had a slice from the Stonehaus on hand. Today, it was half a piece of Fudge Revel, squished into the same box with Cookies and Cream. That avoided decision making, and right now, that sounded like a very good thing. I dug deeply into both with two spoons.

A knock at the back door pulled me out of my sugar-induced revelry. I let Freddie and Kate inside and greeted my friends. McCoy slipped his gray bulk into the kitchen through the door behind them.

“Hello, Jess.” Kate was all smiles. It was like she was a new person.

“Hi, Kate. You must be loving that new schedule at the hospital. Now you have time to actually come for a visit. This is great.”

She beamed. Her teen daughter beamed beside her. I was so glad to have them as neighbors and friends. Seeing them would be a welcome break from worrying about the murder case.

“Sorry, I don’t have much to offer in the way of refreshments.” I looked around the little kitchen. I didn’t know what I was looking for there. My eye landed on the cookie jar I’d brought in from the car.

I walked over to it. “Too bad this thing isn’t full of anything but junk drawer nonsense.” I said, poking it. “Maybe I should bake us up something good.”

“Thanks, but we have plans to go out for a late dinner together. Fred just wanted to stop by here first.”

Freddie shook her dark bangs back from her face and I saw that her eyes had that dangerous twinkle. “I heard you found a necklace.”

That wasn’t quite true, and I didn’t know where she’d heard it.
