“Go, Pirates,” Mac greeted her as she joined her in first period. Mac was dressed in a matching Pirates sweatshirt and faded jeans, but she’d gone to the extra step of wearing her hair in pigtails, one dyed blue and the other gray.

“I hope that hair color is temporary.” Alyson settled herself onto the stool next to her.

“Yeah, it’ll wash right out.”

“I love the blue lipstick. It matches perfectly with your blue nail polish,” Alyson teased.

“Hey, I notice a hint of blue eye shadow on your own eyelids.”

“Yeah, I’m fully immersed in the whole school spirit thing. Go, Pirates.” Alyson shot her fist in the air.

“Hey, guys,” Chelsea greeted the pair as she took her seat behind them. “Are you both ready to cheer tonight until you can cheer no more?”

“I’ve been warming up my tonsils all morning,” Alyson confirmed. “Aren’t you freezing in that cheerleading outfit? They should make cheerleading pants for such cold days.”

“My legs do get a little cold, but I figure if the guys can play in subfreezing weather I can cheer in it. I’ve got nylons on, and they help a little. Have you seen Trevor this morning?”

“I talked to him last night,” Mac said. “He said the whole team was skipping classes this morning so they could get in the zone before the game. They’re all meeting in the gym to go over plays and stuff. We get out of school early for the rally anyway, so all the teachers agreed not to hold their absences against them.”

“Hey, how come the cheerleaders don’t get out of class? This game is as big a deal for us as it is for them,” Chelsea complained.

“I don’t know; you’ll have to ask your coach. Maybe she didn’t see the need for her cheerleaders to spend the morning zoning.”

“It’s not fair. The football players are getting all the special privileges and glory that go along with having a winning season. What people don’t take into account is that they never would have gotten this far if we hadn’t been there to cheer them on. What we do is an integral part of the whole process.”

“I feel your pain,” Alyson sympathized. “Go, cheerleaders.”

Chelsea raised her hand as Mr. Harris walked into the room.

“Yes, Miss Green?”

“Can I be excused from class on account of the rally and all?”

“I wasn’t aware the cheerleaders were meeting.”

“It’s sort of a last-minute thing.”

“I wasn’t planning on doing much today anyway because we have a shortened period, so I guess it’s okay, but bring me a note from your coach on Monday.”

“Sure, Mr. Harris.” Chelsea began gathering up her things. “I’ll see you at the rally.”

“What is she going to do?” Mac whispered to Alyson. “It’s not like the cheerleaders really are meeting or anything. Is she just going to go sit somewhere by herself?”

“If I know Chelsea, she’ll probably go around and find the other cheerleaders and get them all out of class too. She doesn’t seem like the type who likes to be bested.
