Ibro BekriÄ was not en route to Bosnia, the last place in the world he wanted to go, or to Mexico. At least not for now. He went into the valet parking and watched for a time when all the attendants were sprinting for cars. He found the fob for a Lincoln of some sort and took it. He walked into the garage pulling his wheeled suitcase and smiled at everyone he saw. He saw a Lincoln SUV and pressed the Lock button on the fob. Nothing.
Ibro continued the next Lincoln was a sedan. He pressed the fob and was rewarded with its horn blowing. He opened the driverâs door and popped the trunk and put his suitcase in it.
He left valet parking without having to pay, since the Lincolnâs daily tariff was charged to someoneâs room.
Ibro avoided the Interstate into town and got onto Dale Mabry. He put on his sunglasses and a ball cap and maxed his Visa on every bank ATM he saw.
The withdrawals with the thousand of flash money he usually carried, gave him a good grubstake.
Luckily, the Lincoln was almost full of fuel. Ibro stopped at a supermarket and purchased four fifty-dollar gas cards to national chains.
Normally, he would have to go into a convenience store to pay cash or use his only credit card at the pump to refuel. This way he could refill his tank with a modicum of invisibility.
While still on Dale Mabry Highway, he decided to exploit his credit card to the extent possible. He would identify his location in this one area then stop using it.
At a Walmart, he bought a burner phone and activated it. He bought and loaded a reloadable Visa. He bought lots of food and drink not requiring heating. He bought an atlas. Then, he left fast in case one of the area police agencies already had his card in the system.
Ibro put his belongings in the Lincoln and studied the atlas for a moment before deciding his route.
It was a full day before the owner of the Lincoln tried to claim it. It took another hour to look for it, the keys and for everyone to agree it was stolen. An hour later, Joe Horner was apprised.
And Ibro BekriÄ was in the wind by then.
