Felipe: You’re going with her to a family wedding?

Manny: Yeah, but it’s not like that. It’s in the community garden. It’ll be more like a family weeding than a family wedding if you know what I mean

Felipe: No.

Manny: You need me to explain the joke?

Felipe: I reject ever hearing the joke in the first place. Stop being a coward and video call me.

“I’m not a coward, I’m being considerate,” Manny said in lieu of a greeting when his long-distance-friend picked up the phone. “Clearly, you’re in a public place. Sometimes texting is more practical than a video call.”

Felipe waved this part off entirely and made Manny go over everything that had happened this summer step by step. He didn’t know how to feel about it all laid out like that. Felipe, on the other hand, had no hesitations to jumping in and analyzing the crap out of Manny’s life.

“As long as you’re not actually getting a puppy. Because I love you man, and I’m trying to be nonjudgmental, but a puppy needs more attention than what you’d be able to give them right now.”

“Don’t even. I can be trusted with puppies. I’m trusted with an entire building full of pubescent humans every day. And I didn’t take any puppies home with me. We just played with them. Let them get their wiggles out. Although I did pick up a pamphlet about how to be a respite puppy watcher while the primary foster is out of town. That could be doable.”

“Wow, you’ve been busy, my friend.” Felipe took a swig of his iced mocha. As long as Manny had known him, he’d taken his coffee as cold, sweet, and as milky as possible. Originally, Manny had thought he’d grow out of it, but that was never going to happen. “Puppies aside, this Olivia character seems like a good influence on you.”

“Really? What makes you say that?”

“I don’t remember the last time you called me with something to talk about other than work.”

“You told me to call you.”

“Still though. Think about what you just told me. You’re spending time with people you don’t employ, texting your cousins without scheduling it months in advance—”

Manny groaned. “I’m never going to live that down.”

“No, you will not. At least you’ve come to terms with it.” Felipe was entirely too smug about this whole thing, and his face showed exactly how much this annoyed Manny. “For real though, you’re actually thinking about a relationship with someone—I mean small ‘r’ relationship,” he amended before Manny could protest. “Not out of a sense of obligation but because she’s someone you want to spend time with.”

“I don’t see you as an obligation.”

“That’s good,” Felipe said carefully. “But I’m glad you have someone local. People make a big deal about having their ‘person,’ and I’m not saying that’s my life philosophy or that you need one, but on the most basic level, you deserve to have someone, or multiple someones, you can turn to. When you’re happy, when shit hits the fan, when you’re in the mood to shoot the shit.
