CHAPTER 32

The Girl Who Looks Like Marnie

“So, man. What is this?” Robert asked.

His publicist had come into the kitchen in a huff.

Danny was on the cover of a tabloid magazine. Someone had snapped a photo of him kissing the redhead he'd danced with last night. Over the picture the headline read: Throat Checker.

Danny placed his elbows on the counter and launched into a haughty newscaster accent. “Well, pops. He cocked his hand into a gun position. “A throat check is what the young kids call—”

“I know what a throat check is.” Veins jumped to attention along Robert's neck. His skin was a bright shade of mottled red. “What were you doing like this out in the open? You'd just left the vigil. Do you understand what this looks like?”

Marnie entered the room and began making herself a cup of tea. She wore a bright blue top and a pair of white Capri pants. A subtle change from the jeans she normally wore like a uniform.

Danny turned the magazine over. The next article was about tips on applying foundation.

“Can I see the picture?” she asked.

“Sure.” He picked the magazine up and made sure to swing his arm over the cup of coffee that sat on the counter. His wrist knocked it over and a splash of dark liquid splattered against her pants before she could move out of the way.

He dropped the magazine to his side. “Sorry. I think I'm still hung over.”

“No worries.” She said over her shoulder as she left the room.

Robert had grabbed some paper towels and wiped up the spill. When he was finished, he glared at Danny.

He shrugged his shoulders. “What?”

“The way you treat that girl, I don't understand why she stays.”

Because I can protect her. Robert didn't know the score and he didn't need to. He was embarrassed about his performance last night and letting Marnie see the picture would only make his humiliation worse. He felt certain she'd put two and two together and realize the girl was a poor substitute for his desire to be with her. As if the pathetic display in the limo hadn't already proved that. At least he had the cover of being inebriated to hide behind. The picture, on the other hand, wouldn't be so easily explained away.

“Rob, picture this. Danny Roland goes to Emily Lowell's funeral. Reminisces about good times, but after three years the man has moved on. No longer with Nia Waters, and clearly judging by this picture, back on the market.” He raised an eyebrow.

Robert grudgingly gave in. “It works.”

“Of course it does. I've been doing this since I was in diapers.”
