Jin lingered amongst the gumtrees by Moonlight Creek, watching the miner’s cottage across the water.

He felt the simmering menace of the diggings at his back, but after being imprisoned within the Union Reef Mine for as long as he had, he barely felt it anymore. The darkness had become a part of him. It’d shaped his soul, melded him into the creature he had to be to avenge the carnage the Trine had wrought all those years ago.

Carnage they had attempted again this very night.

He watched Patrick and Holly as they sat on the verandah, talking about the reality of the world she now found herself in. It should be him sitting there; he should be telling her these things.

Flexing his aching fingers, he glared. His appearance at the wake had triggered the Trine, but not in the way he’d been expecting. It was foolish to go after Holly so openly, but it’d only been one of them, which—

It was a test. The attack, the convenient arrival of Patrick. All of it. Holly Burke had become his weakness without him even knowing it.

He saw Patrick getting ready to leave, so he straightened and ghosted through the trees, following the vampire through the night. Jin caught him a hundred meters from Holly’s cottage.

He leapt from the shadows and shoved Patrick against a tree, growling deep in his chest. The hatred he felt in that moment drove him to pick up a splintered branch and brandish it in front of him…but he didn’t know what made him stop an inch short of plunging it into Patrick’s heart.

Patrick turned towards him, his eyes dark. “Look at what you’ve become.” He spread his arms wide. “Now’s your chance, Jin. Take it.”

The branch slipped from his fingers.

“I’m not afraid of your threats,” he continued. “You talk a big game, but that’s all it is. Talk.”

“If it’s war you want,” Jin snarled, “I’ll be glad to give it to you.”

“Really?” Patrick stepped closer. “I heard what you said tonight, Jin. I see why you lingered here. Are you really prepared to let Holly suffer as part of your master plan?”

Jin faltered, his anger almost breaking.

“I thought so,” Patrick scoffed.

Jin snarled and buried his fingers into the front of Patrick’s shirt, jerking him close. “If you hurt her—”

“I know this must be painful for you, Jin. To you, what went on between the Burkes and the Trine happened only yesterday…but it’s been over one hundred and seventy years.” He sighed and pushed Jin’s hands. “I’m going to implore to you one last time; stop this madness before someone else dies.”

“Someone else?” he scoffed. “Do you want to tell me the truth about Hannah Burke, then?”

“Hannah died of a heart attack,” Patrick replied. “But what happened to Holly tonight was because of your actions. You forced the Trine’s hand. They’re testing you at Holly’s expense. This isn’t the past repeating itself, Jin.”

“Do you really believe that?” he hissed. “Are you such a fool?”

“Are you?” The force of Patrick’s words drove Jin back a step.
