Chapter 22
After a brief search, Churchill and Pemberley found Cairistiona in a window seat in the morning room.
âOh, I was hoping you were the maid bringing in the coffee.â
âI think sheâs been sent off to fold linen now.â
âWhat does one have to do to get a coffee in this place?â
âOne might have to resort to making it oneself.â
She laughed, seemingly finding the thought inordinately funny. âYouâre the two detective ladies arenât you? Tryphena told me all about you. Mind if I smoke?â
âNot at all.â
âArenât you the lady whose skirt fell down at the garden party?â she asked, once her cigarette was lit.
âNo, that wasnât me.â
âI felt sure I remember the name Churchill being mentioned.â
âPerhaps it was, but it certainly wasnât my skirt which slipped down. Now then, the outcome of your fatherâs will has been quite a surprise hasnât it?â
âYou can say that again.â She blew out a plume of smoke. âI thought the lot would go to Humphrey. I had no idea Papa would consider leaving it all to Surpant.â
âWere you hoping for a little more yourself?â
âOf course! Books and prints. After everything I did for that man? Clearly the housekeeper wormed her way into his affections. I can imagine her squirming like a worm, canât you Mrs Churchill?â
âI canât say Iâve given the image much thought.â
âShe will have seduced him of course.â
âCripes, do you think so?â
Pemberley tried to suppress a gagging noise.
âWhy else would he leave her everything?â continued Cairistiona. âShe crept insidiously into his life like a slow release of poisonous gas.â
âGosh. Do you think sheâs responsible for his death?â
âYes! I think itâs quite obvious now that old Surpant poisoned poor dear Papa. And the police inspector wants more evidence! Can you believe it?â
âWell thatâs Inspector Mappin for you.â
âIâve a good mind to get Scotland Yard down here, theyâll soon have her charged. Thereâs absolutely no chance of this place falling into her hands, thatâs for sure. How foolish does she think we all are?â
âYou live some distance away, is that right?â
âHoffmanner Manor. Itâs the other side of Harneth Cublet.â
âWherever that may be.â
âEast of here, near Fidgeworth Dendelbury.â
Churchill glanced at the notebook in Pemberleyâs hand and gave her a nod to write this down.
âYou live some distance away, and yetââ
âWell I wouldnât describe it as some distance, itâs quite near actually!â she interrupted with a laugh.
âI see. Well, itâs not exactly down the road is it?â
âNo. What of it?â
âAnd yet your sister tells me that youâve been a regular visitor to Gripedown Hall of late.â
âItâs my home!â
âIt was your home as a child, Hoffmanner Manor is your home. You share it with your husband Mr Vigors-Slipcote, am I right?â
âYes, to be honest with you, thatâs why Iâm often here. Itâs because heâs always there.â
âI see. Your marriage is unhappy?â
âNo itâs perfectly happy! As long as we spend as little time as possible together then weâre both as merry as larks.â
âIâm pleased to hear it. You do, however, appear to have spent an increasing amount of time at Gripedown in recent weeks from what your sister tells me.
