COYOTES CAN RUN about 40 miles per hour at top speed—5 miles per hour slower than Jack-Rabbits—but they can keep this 40 miles speed longer than the Jacks can maintain their 45 mile rate!

The Wizardry of Weight and Legerdemain of Length

(Secrets of Knowing Actual Weights, Heights, Etc., Without Instruments)

Height by Shadow

To measure the height of a cliff, tall tree, building, etc., which casts a shadow, measure your own shadow and then the shadow of the object. Multiply the length of the object’s shadow by that of your own height, and then divide the result by the length of your own shadow. This will give the height of the object.

Fish Weight by Balanced Pole

Balance a pole on the upper edge of a double bitted axe driven into the top of a stump, or on a piece of rock, with a sharp edge uppermost, placed on a stone wall, flat boulder, or stump. If the pole tapers, add weight (say sinkers tied to a line fastened to the end of the pole) till the balance point is exactly half way between the ends of the pole. Then hang any known weight (a two or four pound carton of sugar, say) to one end of the pole, and the fish to be weighed to the other. Move the pole to a point where it will again balance, and measure the respective distances to each end from the point of balance. Multiply the known weight by its distance in inches from the balance point, and divide by the distance in inches of the fish from the balance point. This will give a mighty close approximation, very close, indeed, to the fish’s actual weight. The formula is: “The known weight, multiplied by its distance from the point of balance is equal to the product of the unknown weight and its distance from the point of balance.”
