JOHN FREDERICK HERRING (1795–1865):

Herring senior (1795–1865) was the leading Victorian painter of horses and sporting subjects, and was consequently given royal patronage by George IV and the Queen (and also by the Duke of Orléans). He held the curious post of ‘Animal Painter to the Duchess of Kent’. Herring had started life as a stable boy, coachman and sign-painter before his talent was recognised. Later in life he earned enough to own fine horses of his own – some of which became his models. By then he’d broadened his range and was producing fine studies of other animals, domestic and farmyard, painted from life. He is easily confused with his son, John Frederick Herring junior (1820–1907), who painted less well in the same style. Both artists produced a great many sporting prints.
