“Do you see, Little One?” the old man said, looking up to the lizard. “We have caught a couple of bandits. What should we do with these thieves?” He spoke with a Spanish accent.

Jack’s leg started going again.

“This place stinks!” he shouted. “And you smell too!”

“You don’t like my smell?” the man asked. “I say you boys smell a little ripe yourselves. I may have to soak you both in brine before I make a stew out of you.”

I figured the guy was joking, but Jack didn’t. His back stiffened and both of his legs began to jump and quiver.

He was looking all around the room for a way to get out or for something to whack the old guy with, when he spotted a hammer lying on the floor and ran and grabbed it. He looked like he was going to explode.

“You aren’t gonna make stew outta anybody!” Jack said, holding the handle of the hammer with both hands.

“Drop it!” the old man demanded as he leaned forward on his stool, pointing his knife at Jack.

“Stay back!” Jack yelled. “Don’t you move! You ain’t gonna cook us or beat on us. Nobody’s gonna hit us. Never again! From now on, I’m gonna do the hittin’!”

Suddenly the old man’s glare softened. He lowered his knife and eased off.
