Chapter 6

The next morning at the Breezy Spoon was as busy as I had expected it to be, but after the breakfast rush had tapered off we finished decorating the dining room with jack-o-lanterns in the front window and paper bats and ghosts hanging above every booth. Kitty had gone to Tammy's Bakery to pick up cookies and candy, and by the time she got back I had a basket ready for them on the counter with stickers spread out around it.

“I hope this is enough,” Kitty said as she arranged the sweets in the basket. “Do you think a lot of trick-or-treaters will come tonight?”

“I don't know; I wasn't here last Halloween so this is the first year we're trying this,” I said.

“I'll see about bring Timmy here when I take him trick-or-treating tonight. First we have to get to the street where Mayor Pumphrey and Millie Farnsworth live, but after that we can come over here if Timmy's not too tired.”

“What's special about Millie's street?”

“Millie is in some weird competition with Mayor Pumphrey to see who can attract the most trick-or-treaters. Last year Millie was giving out the big dollar-sized candy bars so everyone would come to her house, because Mayor Pumphrey only had the little snack-size bars. When he saw that he couldn't compete he started handing out cans of beer. That got a lot of adults to come to his door, but then the sheriff made him stop.”

“You must be kidding!” I said. I was about to say “How could anybody be that dumb?” but then I remembered who I was talking about. “Who cares how many Halloweeners you get coming to your door? Didn't that get a little costly?”

“It must have,” Kitty said, “but not as costly as this year. Uncle Gene McGee told me that Mayor Pumphrey special-ordered 150 of the dollar sized candy bars from McGee's market, but Millie special-ordered the same number of those big $2 bags of M & M's, so this should be interesting.”

“Maybe I should take up trick-or-treating and go over there myself,” I laughed.

“Here's another Halloween tip; don't go to Sammy's Saloon for the Halloween party. When I went into Tammy's bakery, Sammy was there arguing with Tammy over some cookies he wanted to order for the party; he wanted her to make the cookies really salty so that they would make the customers thirsty and they would order more drinks.”

“That sounds like Sammy.” Hearing about Sammy's Saloon reminded me of something Pollyanna had said when she was in the Breezy Spoon talking to Ham Hamsky about Dora; she had referred to Ed Reece as one of their new regulars. I wanted to talk to Reece and find out more about his relationship with Rudy Richards (not to mention his whereabouts at the time of Rudy's murder) and Sammy's Saloon might be the right place to do that. He would be relaxed there and have his guard down, and I could think up a good way to strike up a conversation with him and get information without him knowing what I was up to.
