Chapter Twenty-One
The package looked completely normal. U.S. Priority Mail medium-sized box, just like my mom used whenever mailing us gifts. The stupid cursed package that started this stupid cursed day with its stupid, smelly chefâs hat inside.
Thelmaâs betrayal stung, but it felt worse knowing Iâd hurt her feelings. There wasnât much time to figure out what made her think Iâd called her a bad actress. But if I ever got out of this time loop, I swore to make things up to her. If Tony turned out to be alive, I could bring her those cupcakes she loved so much.
For now, I raced to my car once again. If Tony was at some lodge preparing for his sisterâs wedding, I needed to be there.
Thus far, all of my efforts to leave Shady Grove had been unsuccessful. I couldnât get to Willow Falls. But the lodge sat at the edge of Shady Grove County. How big was this spell? I was about to find out.
I didnât have any better ideas, so I prayed this would work.
As quickly yet safely as I could manage, I put the house behind me and turned toward the road that would lead me to I-87 and out of town. The resort listed on the invitation had been unfamiliar, but I remembered the address well enough to speak it into my GPS.
Although I expected the effort to be futile, I asked my phone to call Kevin again while I drove. Nothing. I also requested a text that said âEmergency. Call immediately.â It failed. What else could I do?
Something had been nagging at the back of my mind for a while now. Finally, it hit me: when Olive and I had gone to Tonyâs house, we found the realtor lying dead at the bottom of a collapsed staircase. When had he arrived? Amira had planned to go to a showing at four; weâd gotten there around three-thirty. What if Todd had died shortly before we found him?
I hadnât checked his pulse, hadnât felt his body. Olive swore his head was lying at such an unnatural angle that he couldnât possibly have survived the fall. But what if heâd been only very recently dead?
More importantly, what if he had been traveling to Tonyâs house when I got to Missing Pieces, and I could avoid his death by skipping the store and getting there first? Maybe I could stop him from entering the basement and dying on the staircase.
It might be a wild goose chase. But I didnât have anything to lose by heading over there, and maybe I could save Todd.
Maybe I was meant to save Todd.
Maybe this entire terrible day was all about me saving Todd, and I could end the time loop by getting to Tonyâs house in time.
That made no sense at all. Why would Mary care if Todd died? For that matter, why would Mary care about saving Tony? But at this point, I had a huge problem to solve, a lot of half-formed hypotheses,
