Eryk let out a long sigh of relief as he bundled a still zonked Far through the door of the safe house. Far had woken up twice during the trip, making it difficult for Eryk to keep him in the car. The first time he tried to get out to show a guard on the train an example of his tail shaking dance and the second time he tried to give Eryk a blow job. Saying no because people wandered up and down between the cars, was the hardest thing Eryk had done in a long time. Far was snoring loudly now, his head flopping in an unattractive fashion and drool running out of his mouth that would’ve sent Far’s peacock ballistic if he wasn’t doped too. Eryk resisted dumping his mate on the bed and set him down gently instead. Brushing Far’s bangs back from his face, he kissed him then he hurried from the room. He needed a drink. He needed two drinks. Hell, he needed the entire bottle after that.

Tension, stress, they were emotions Eryk was used to. His jackal was well versed in keeping him safe, but with Far, it was vastly different. Despite his confidence in front of his mate, Eryk wondered how much longer they’d be running. It wasn’t as though he was used to dealing with royalty. Scum however, he could handle.

The kitchen was small, typical of British houses. No lights shone outside the window, and Eryk’s jackal assured him no one was around. Hunting through the cupboards, Eryk found a half empty bottle of Scotch and a large tumbler. Pouring himself a triple shot, Eryk chucked it down his throat. He poured a second one and took it through to the living room.

Pulling the curtains, Eryk put a match to the paper and kindling waiting in the fireplace. It struck him, as he watched the flames grow consuming the wood, that he was reacting. For them to be safe, they needed to be proactive, not reactive. Which meant finding dirt on King Screech. Leverage. Something that would stop the King’s relentless pursuit and his sale of Far.

“That’s where my research skills come in handy,” Eryk muttered as he pulled out the laptop they bought before the tunnel crossing. There was very little beyond the normal society blah about the king online. He’d already checked that. But having a Reuter’s account and more than a few contacts really helped. Firing off a few discreetly worded emails, Eryk set his laptop aside, drumming his fingers on the arm of the couch.

“You okay?” The couch dipped and a rumpled Far curled beside him, tucking his feet underneath him. “I like this house. It’s small and cute and cosy.”

“Have you recovered?” Eryk grinned. Far’s hair was sticking out all over the place, but he’d found the fluffy slippers Eryk packed as a surprise for him.

“Please tell me I didn’t do anything embarrassing.” Far buried his nose in Eryk’s chest. “It’s all fuzzy. I’ve got no idea.”

“You mean apart from offering to shake your tail for two of the guards and trying to give me a blow job.
