HAZY SUNLIGHT STREAMED in through the bay window onto Ella’s forehead. Why were the curtains open, and why was it so bloody hot? Her mouth was dry and stale. She reached for the bottle of water on the side of the bed and took three loud gulps. The radiators hummed a reminder that they had been on all night, which explained her tight face and puffy eyes.

She pulled her covers off and tried to recall the previous day. Her body was aching pleasantly so she hadn’t imagined the amazing sex. They had definitely eaten the Christmas treats as her tongue was still furry with orangey chocolate, but there was something else. Zac’s arm was wrapped around her waist, and she threw it back, waking him with a start. Clambering over him, she ran her hands over his bare back.

‘What are you doing?’ He laughed and tickled her, but she didn’t laugh back.

‘I had a strange dream or another hallucination or something. Let me see your back.’

He lay on his front obligingly as she straddled his lower half, running her fingers over his shoulder blades and below his arms. She wasn’t sure what she was looking for, a sharp nub, perhaps, or a loose feather.

He sighed and tried to twist around again.

‘You didn’t imagine it, Ella.’

She jumped off him, put on her T-shirt, and backed up against the wardrobe, the feel of its cool mirrors reminding her of how it had all begun. He propped himself up on his side, his wavy hair falling over one eye, and his lips parted. He had a glow about him. How had she never noticed?

‘You must have questions,’ he said. ‘I’m happy to answer them now.’

The bedroom walls vibrated with apprehension. What did he want from her? She wanted to cry or run away or throw herself into his arms. Instead she stayed where she was, her hands pressed flat against the glass.

‘How many women have you slept with?’

Zac raised one eyebrow.

‘I’m an angel, Ella, a being from another realm. You can ask me anything about the past, the future, about God, and the answer to life, yet your first question is how many women I’ve had sex with?’

‘Yes.’

‘OK. The answer is one, just you. Next question.’

‘I don’t believe you.’

Zac sighed again.

‘I told you last night I’ve only ever loved you, and I’m not allowed to lie. Neither am I particularly permitted to fall from grace for a pretty face, but you are clearly irresistible and a bad influence.’

She could see the truth in his eyes, his unearthly eyes that were a different shade of blue every time she looked at them. He wasn’t lying.

‘Come and sit down, Ella. Nothing has changed.’

‘Are you crazy! Of course it has, everything has changed! Yesterday I thought you were my boyfriend, and now I discover you aren’t even human. I thought we were a couple. We even had sex, God knows how many times!’

‘Four times. Seven if you include the night before. Is that a problem?’

‘Yes! Maybe. I don’t know.
